The Sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church

“Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit” (Acts 8:14-17).

Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist together constitute the “sacraments of Christian initiation,” whose unity must be safeguarded. Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.

Confirmation Preparation

The diocesan requires a two-year formation period for the celebration of this sacrament

Here at Assumption parish, this program usually begins in grade 6 (Level 6) with the student participating in classes which take place during the week: Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday (depending upon the catechist’s availability).

The second year of the program (Level 7) takes place on Wednesday, 5:45 – 7:00p.m. The Confirmation program involves an excellent video/discussion group format led by trained catechists. The program includes a special retreat day as well as celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The parish will celebrate Confirmation in the fall of the 8th grade. High school students who wish to celebrate the sacrament should contact Renata Tutka-Ptak our parish’s Youth Minister and Confirmation Coordinator for further information: 631-585-8760 ext. 121; email, RPTak@abvmcentereach.com for details.

In addition, our Middle School Ministry (MSM) program is an additional formation experience available for those who wish to participate. They meet on Thursday from 7:00 – 8:45 p.m. Contact Renata Tutka-Ptak our parish’s Youth Minister for further information: 631-585-8760 ext. 121; email, RPTak@abvmcentereach.com.
